The Death of Common Sense in Job Hunting
by Michael Lord, Founder & Managing Director, Michael Lord & Company
We all know that the economy is rough and that job hunters are finding
it extremely difficult to find new positions. But not all job hunters
are searching with the same degree of diligence that we'd expect. Here
are some excuses/justifications we've heard recently:
- We scheduled an interview for an unemployed attorney. In response, the
candidate declined to attend the interview because she had to pack her
bags for a European trip for which she was leaving in two days.
- We asked an
unemployed candidate to send along a resume, but he refused to send it
because
he was "eating breakfast" at 10:30 am.
- We tried to schedule an interview
for an associate but he couldn't go because
the proposed date conflicted with a haircut appointment.
- In trying to recruit
a candidate out of a very slow practice area, the candidate says "I'm
not interested. We just had a round of layoffs in my group and I wasn't
among the associates let go, so I'm safe for now."
- An unemployed candidate declined to go on an interview on his birthday.
